Its important to be aware of your backyard fire safety, and how to be compliant with both Municipality and community bylaws.
This is a reminder that at no time are BBQs, smokers, etc. allowed within 10′ of the homes at Hangingstone Point. Various areas throughout Fort McMurray, Alberta may have some variation to those requirements, so it is BEST to look for those in both the municipality guidelines, your community bylaws, etc.
Properties that have large propane firepits in the backyard are prohibited at all times due to the reservoirs posing a direct and significant increase risk to fire safety. Anything up to about a 20lb tank, you can consider as within reason, however do verify this if you are unsure.
In addition, many fire related devices DO NOT comply with insurance policy requirements due to the heightened risk to and safety of homes and fire related loss in high risk areas.
Fire wood based firepits using real wood are also not permitted.
Any home with these present or fail to cooperate with fire requirements can be subject to ticketing and the costs associated removal.
When not in use, it is best to disconnect any source of fuel. Never store near or up against the building. These must always maintain a 10ft distance as safety cannot be verified otherwise.
Fort McMurray has very strict fire regulations and insurance policies as a result of the city having suffered such catastrophic disaster in both 2015 and in several near disaster fires subsequently ongoing (loses) every year.
