Furnace Filters?! Wait, explain!

The cold weather is had our furnaces on constantly through our cold Fort McMurray winter. With this last cold snap, some of us may have opted to turn the needle up even just a little more as more humidity enters the air with the freezing and melting cycles occurring.

One regularly required step you need to commit to with your rental home is changing your furnace filter. Energy Star and Carrier recommends checking furnace filters once a month, especially during winter and summer, and replacing them no less than once every six months.

Wondering why it’s so important to replace those filters? Check out the top three reasons why you should change furnace filters regularly:

  1. A Clean furnace lasts longer

Accumulated particulates and dirt in filters over time, especially during summer and winter months when your heating and cooling systems are in peak use, can cause quite a bit of strain on your system when choked for air. Dirty build-up causes clogs in filters resulting in the inability of air to pass through easily, the system then must work harder, causing overheating. Overheating can cause serious damage, and may even result in needing to replace the furnace. Clogged filters can cause dirt to build up in other areas of the system as well, causing pollution and extra repairs that wouldn’t normally be necessary.

Taking this step further, in the event that your furnace goes out and you aren’t there to attend to its repair immediately during cold months, can leave pipes to freeze and burst. Forget about a furnace replacement when a restoration is now on your plate.

  1. Healthy air

Poor indoor air quality can cause quite a few uncomfortable symptoms mimicking or stimulating allergies, sneezing, headaches and similar symptoms to Vertigo, as well as various respiratory problems. People suffering from asthma and allergies can be very affected by poor indoor air quality.

  1. You have a furry family member

Pets add extra dirt and dander into the air. Changing the air filter in your furnace regularly will prevent dust, dirt, mold spores, soot, bacteria, and allergens from building up in the air inside your home.

The life of y5our furnace and the health and safety of your family depend on regular heating system maintenance. Changing your furnace filter is a very simple way to keep your indoor air clean and avoid costly repairs to your heating system.

  1. Reduce energy costs

Clogged filters can cause your system to work harder. That means an increase in your energy bills. Heating and cooling account for about half of the average home’s utility bills! Replacing your furnace filter regularly means that fan motor doesn’t have to work as hard, and you won’t be blowing extra dollars avoidable energy costs. With rising energy costs in Alberta, we think that those cost savings can mean a lot to a household.

  1. Peace of Mind!

Last but not least. The simple steps taken to ensure your home is in optimal condition means that you have fewer issues arise and you can rest better knowing that the simple steps you took every few months preventing unnecessary havoc when a heater goes out on a cold night, or your AC can continue to run on a hot night.
