New or seasoned on the “for rent” market?!  What should you know about visitor parking in Hangingstone Point, Fort McMurray. Read more here!

With the return of the busy and bustling community, visitor parking areas will see more regular enforcement to ensure everyone can welcome their well deserved visitors with easy access and accommodation. For rent? We have only a handful of townhomes for rent right now. Great news but this means its busy now.

We’ve seen a dramatic improvement in the availability of our parking for guests and disabled users. Thank you very much for your support while we work out the needs on site. What you will see evolve over time, is how these parking lots and parking requirements morph to meet the needs of all of our wonderful residents!

A few questions come up regularly, so we see this as a good opportunity to communicate some further explanation:

  1. Disability accessible parking: The number of visitor parking spots and disabled spaces are a requirement per the municipality. These spots are only useable by those with a formally issued placard.
  2. Prkg1 1 270x360Who issues the tickets: Tickets are issued under RMWB authority
  3. Can a ticket be waved? We cannot “waive” or delete tickets issued under the RMWB.
  4. Who monitors the parking requirements?: As private property, although we can’t choose the number of spaces we have, we are allowed to decide how those spaces are used – such as the length of time a person can park in a spot.
  5. Can I pay to rent more parking?: We have invested in an additional parking area, please send an email to admin@hangingstonepoint.ca if renting an additional stall is an option you’re interested in. We are drafting a list for this initiative.
  6. Can I ignore paying my ticket?: The city offers a substantial discount on a ticket if the fine is paid online within 7 days of receiving it.

Our Fort McMurray residents are working together and have been really top notch in adjusting to the parking regulations that have gone into effect. People have taken great efforts to ask thoughtful questions of the security team and Administration. We also take a moment to monitor the trends with the conversations being had, helping us further evaluate how to adjust to the community needs!

We know a few tickets have been issued and that can be frustrating as no one wants to be responsible to pay for tickets. We would like to highlight some facts to consider around the issuance of these tickets.

  • The condominium board makes no money from city tickets, we wish the money was ours to keep – we have plenty of bills to pay. but this sadly is not the case
  • Tickets issued under the RMWB bylaws, are registered against your vehicle.
  • Ripping up tickets into confetti as rewarding as that may make you feel, will only make you feel much worse when you can’t renew your license plates due to an outstanding fine, interest charges and possibly court fees that will all need to be paid before you’re able to renew your plates.
  • You lose the opportunity to take advantage of the discounted offered by the city by paying online and will pay the full amount.

We are also asking that you be neighbourly, vacant driveways are not a suitable way to get around visitor parking requirements.  Vehicles in violation of this will still be subject to ticket/tow.

We understand that parking may be a challenge during winter maintenance on Abasand Dr. The city will not tow your vehicle if it is removed before 7am when they start maintenance. We also have a huge new staging area off Almond Crescent where additional parking is available and we can relax parking rules as needed to accommodate our residents.

In terms of disabled parking placards, visitor parking is limited to 4 hours whether you have a placard or not. Using the space on a continuous basis is an abuse of the accommodation provided for disabled users. Anyone can report the misuse of a parking placard through Alberta Health Services at https://www.alberta.ca/report-parking-placard-abuse.aspx . The province will investigate, may revoke privileges and takes this quite seriously. (Parking in a disabled spot without a placard is a $500 fine, we suggest that you avoid doing that).
