If your wash machine or dyer is leaving marks or stains on your clothes, it is likely time to clean them. This falls under your general care of your home and fortunately does not mean the appliance is in need of repair.
Regularly cleaning your washer and dryer is essential to prevent mold, remove buildup, and ensure efficiency. Washers should be cleaned every 1–3 months, while dryer lint screens should be cleared after every load.
How to Clean a Washing Machine (Front & Top Load)
- Run a Cleaning Cycle: Use a dedicated laundry detergent or cleaner, or add 2 cups of white vinegar to the detergent dispenser and 1/2 cup of baking soda directly to the drum. Run the hottest/longest cycle (or “Clean Washer” cycle).
- Clean the Gasket (Front Loaders): Pull back the rubber seal and wipe it with a cloth soaked in white vinegar or a mix of water and bleach to remove mold/grime.
- Clean the Dispenser: Remove the detergent drawer and soak it in warm, soapy water; scrub with a toothbrush to remove residue.
- Dry and Air Out: Wipe down the drum and leave the door or lid open after every use to prevent odor-causing mold.
- Filter Check: If your machine has a pump filter (often on the front bottom), clean it out to remove debris.
How to Clean a Dryer
- Clean the Lint Screen (Every Load): Remove the lint trap and remove all debris to prevent fires and ensure proper airflow.
- Deep Clean Lint Screen (Every 6 Months): Scrub the screen with a nylon brush, hot water, and liquid detergent to remove hidden residue.
- Clean the Drum: Wipe the inside with a soft cloth dampened with mild soap and warm water, then dry thoroughly.
- Vacuum the Vent (Every 6-12 Months): If safe or accessible to you, unplug the dryer, disconnect the exhaust vent from the back, and use a vacuum or dryer cleaning brush to remove lint from the duct system.
